Custom Temperature Probes
These are the same RTD (resistive thermal device) Pt100 temperature probes that we use in our brewery, available for purchase in two forms:
- Pre-assembled and ready to use (no soldering or assembly required!)
- DIY Kit (assembly and soldering required, tools not included)
We use RTD (Pt100) instead of thermocouple (TC) probes in our brewery as they offer greater accuracy over the brewing temperature range. RTDs also remain more accurate over time (less drift which means less re-calibration).
We've partnered with various manufacturers to purchase these parts in volume, reducing the cost as compared to buying parts individually.
What temperature probes do I need and how many?
Our brewery has three kettles so three probes are used as follows:
- The Hot Liquor Tank & Mash Lauter Tun use a stainless steel liquid tight RTD sensor with NPT (tapered) thread as the probe tip screws into a stainless steel "T" fitting.
- The Boil Kettle uses a stainless steel liquid tight RTD sensor with M14x1.5 Metric (straight) thread, 2" long probe, stainless steel nut with silicone washer, and detachable connector. A Metric (straight) thread is used as the probe is secured to the kettle wall with a nut. An NPT (tapered) thread will not work.
If you're building your brewery following our instructions, order all three (3) using the links to the left in the 1/2" NPT probe size in whatever colours you prefer.
Tri-Clamp (sometimes called Tri-Clover) probes are also available in different sizes and lengths for those wishing to use different kettles.
Other custom sizes/probe lengths are also available. Email us for details.
What NPT probe sizes are available?
The NPT probes come in two sizes:
- 1/4" NPT thread, 2" long probe (measured from the back part of the threads): This the probe we used on our setup. A stainless steel bushing (reducer) is used to thread this probe into the 1/2" NPT stainless steel "T".
- RECOMMENDED: 1/2" NPT thread, 1.5" long probe (measured from the back part of the threads): This is a newer probe that does not require a stainless steel bushing (reducer). It screws directly into a 1/2" NPT stainless steel "T". It is slightly shorter to avoid hitting the back wall of the "T".
There is no benefit to using one over the other.
Custom sizes/probe lengths are also available. Email us for details.
What Tri-Clover (Tri-Clamp) probe sizes are available?
Some brewers may choose to use Tri-Clover (sometimes called Tri-Clamp) fittings instead. Different probe lengths and flange sizes are available.
Tri-Clover probes with a 1.5" TC flange come in two different probe lengths: A longer 2.36" (60mm) probe length for use directly in a kettle wall, or a shorter 1.38" (35mm) probe length for use in a Tri-Clover Tee similar to how we have our brewing setup designed. The diameter of the outer flange is 1.988" (50.5mm). The 1.5" TC flange works directly with 1" (25mm) , 1.33" (33.7mm), or 1.5" (38mm) Tri-Clover fittings.
Tri-Clover probes with a 2" TC flange are also available for larger setups and come in two different (longer) probe lengths: 6" (150mm) or 8" (200mm) probe lengths. The diameter of the outer flange is 2.52 " (64mm).
Tri-Clover probes with 1.5" TC flange can be used in 2" Tri-Clover fittings (or vice versa) with a suitable adapter/reducer (not included).
Other custom sizes/probe lengths are also available. Email us for details.
How long are the cables?
The standard probe cables are 6 feet long. These may be increased to 8 foot or 12 foot length on a per cable basis by using the optional "ADD-ON" buttons to the right.
Increased lengths are available for both pre-assembled and DIY kits.
Other custom lengths are also available. Email us for details.
What cable colours are available?
Brewers love their designer colours, so our temperature probe cables are available in seven different shades of expandable braided sleeving:
Each cable comes with two layers of sleeving and a stainless steel wire rope to protect the wires. The inside sleeving is always black, the outside colour is up to you.
Our probe cables are blue but feel free choose any colour you like or even mix and match.
Do the pre-assembled temperature probe kits require any work?
No, they are pre-assembled and ready to use. Simply plug them in. No soldering or assembly required, no special tools required.
I want to build my own. What's included in the DIY kits?
For each probe in the DIY Kits, we include everything you need:
- The stainless steel probe with detachable connector and 6 feet (or more) of cabling
- (6 feet or more) 1/8" expandable braided sleeving - black colour (inside layer)
- (6 feet or more) 1/8" expandable braided sleeving - your choice of colour (outside layer)
- (6 feet or more) Stainless steel wire rope, 1x7 strand, 1/32" diameter, 150 pound break strength(
- (Qty: 1) Female XLR3 (3 pin) cable connector
- (2 inches) 5/8" black heat shrink tubing
- (8 inches) 1/4" black heat shrink tubing
- (Qty: 1) Small nylon cable tie
You'll also need to supply the following tools:
- 30-40W soldering iron or soldering station
- Rosin core solder (60% tin, 40% lead)
- Wire cutter/stripper
- Heat gun
How are the wires mapped/configured?
RTD temperature probes have three wires: Two red and one white. The two red wires are interchangeable.
The two red wires connect to XLR pins 1 and 3, and the white wire connects to XLR pin 2.
In our control panel, the two red wires connect to PID controller screws 3 and 4 while the white wire connects to PID controller screw 5.
Are the cables intercheageable?
Yes. Any of the probe tips can use any of the cables that are included. For this reason there is no need to specify which cable colour goes with which probe tip when ordering.
Can the probes be used in a thermowell?
Yes. Some kettles come with thermowells (usually 1/2" NPT or Tri-Clover). Thermowells help protect the probe from damage during cleaning or from overzealous brewers with mash paddles where the probe is buried in grist and can't be seen.
Simply screw the temperature probe tip into the thermowell and then connect the cable. To ensure the fastest heat transfer reaction time, first fill the air gap in the thermowell with a silicone based heat transfer compound.
Is a BSP threaded version available?
The NPT probes may be used as is on BSP fittings of the same size. Both the 1/2" and 1/4" NPT threaded probes thread well into both BSPP and BSPT fittings of the same size.
In other words, if you need to attach a temperature probe to a 1/2" BSP fitting or tee, order a 1/2" NPT probe.
Six colours are available (white, blue, orange, green, red, yellow, black):
Finished probes in three colours (orange, white, and blue):

"When it came time for me to buy my temp probes I looked at how much they were at Auber vs how much all the other parts were off Amazon & whatever other suppliers I would of needed (at a minimum three different suppliers). In the end I felt I was getting a bargain buying from you, paying shipping only once, plus I knew that everything would come in one package (which I recieved in less than 3 days, thank you). I hate having everything I need to build something... minus one part. errr. On top of all that I was happy to support this site by buying directly from the same folk who inspired me to buy these parts in the first place." - Grandequeso (Fred), Journeyman Electrician
"I received my order today and want to give a BIG THANKS to Uncle Spike (Innovations) for a fantastic job! Spike went the extra mile on the temp probes, per my spec's. Excellent packing, great communication - a fantastic job! The end product is perfect, like I did it myself, except without the scraped knuckles! Keep up the great work and looking forward to MORE products (like the SS HLT coil)." - Sparky
