The control panel is the heart of our Electric Brewery that provides us with extremely repeatable and consistent results whenever we brew. It is a 100% custom designed unit built to our exacting specifications using industrial-grade components. Buy once, use it a lifetime.

Almost two years of work have gone into the design and development of this control panel to ensure that it works well ergonomically, is safe to use, and includes all the features a brewer could possibly need. Go 100% electric for safe, easy, and enjoyable indoor brewing.

Control panels are available either completely assembled and tested, or in a kit form that you assemble yourself.

The assembled control panels are custom hand crafted in the USA and also feature a special product tag with serial number and build date (see pictures below). The assembled panels may also feature some internal part substitution that will in no way affect the functionality or durability.

 

Which control panel is right for me?

Three control panels are available:

  • Standard 30A control panel: For producing up to 20 gallons of finished product per batch. A single 4500-5500W element is used in both the boil kettle and hot liquor tank. This is our standard control panel. Only one element may be on at once so brewing back to back batches takes longer.
     
  • 50A control panel for back to back batches: For producing up to 20 gallons of finished product per batch. A single 4500-5500W* element is used in both the boil kettle and hot liquor tank. Both heating elements may be run at the same time in order to speed up brewing back to back batches. For more information see our FAQ: Adapting for a back to back setup.
     
  • 50A control panel for 30+ gallons: For producing more than 30 gallons of finished product per batch and/or for brewers looking to speed up their brew day. Perfect for 1 bbl or 2 bbl pilot electric brewing systems. Two 4500-5500W* elements are used per kettle for a total of 9000-11000W. If you're consistently producing 30 gallons or more then we highly recommend the 50A control panel for 30+ gallons. Only brewing smaller batches now but may want to go bigger in the future? Do the pre-assembled and tested control panels require any work?

No. They are pre-assembled, programmed, and then tested under full load, making them ready to use. No soldering or assembly required, no special tools required. You simply attach the power cord, plug it in, and turn it on.

Pre-assembled panels are professionally punched and powder coated with a matt charcoal finish (less shiny than the Rust-Oleum hammered metal finish spray paint we show in our DIY instructions).

The Power Cord, Temperature Probes, and Heating Elements are not included and may be purchased separately.

 

Do the control panels include the safe start interlock feature?

Yes. The safe start interlock feature is included in all pre-assembled and kit versions of the control panel.

 

I want to build my own. What's included in the DIY kits?

With our kit we ship you the exact parts you need in one big package, all pre-tested and you follow our step by step instructions to assemble. It includes all parts outlined in our Control Panel (Part 1), Control Panel (Part 2), and Control Panel (Safe start interlock) build instructions. The modifications required for the 50A control panel for 30+ gallons can be found in our FAQ: Adapting for a 30+ gallon setup. Absolutely everything is included such as the PIDs, timer, switches, meters, panel tags, handles, heat sink, relays, wire, etc. We even include the heat sink grease, and every single screw and nut. All you need to supply are the tools and follow our instructions. The enclosure is not pre-drilled or pre-punched.

The Power Cord, Temperature Probes, and Heating Elements are not included and may be purchased separately.

Control Panel features

The control panel includes all the features a brewer could need. The intent is to not limit the brewer in any way.

  • Three PID controllers for precise control and monitoring of kettle temperatures in either Celsius or Fahrenheit (0.5 degree Fahrenheit precision, 0.1 degree Celsius precision).
  • Programmable countdown timer with external reset button.
  • Alarm light and buzzer with separate alarm settings and on/off switches for each PID/timer to notify you when: Hot liquor has reached strike temperature, Mash is complete, Mash-out is complete/Hot liquor has reached sparge temperature, Wort is nearing boiling temperature, Hop additions required, Boil is complete, Wort chill temp reached.
  • Control of heating elements in the Hot Liquor Tank and Boil Kettle with selection switch(es).
  • Temperature control in the boil kettle allows for advanced brewing processes such as hop stands where hops are steeped at specific temperatures for extended durations (not available on dial-type boil controls). This process is used by new popular beers such as The Alchemist's Heady Topper.
  • Control of two pumps (one for water, one for wort).
  • Volt and amp meters to monitor power usage.
  • Carrying handles on top and bottom, control guards on front door.
  • LED pilot lights that last 30,000 hours, no bulbs to replace.
  • Oversized custom anodized heat sink (parts last longer if they do not run as hot).
  • Wall mounting hardware and door locking key included.
  • Industrial grade components built to last.
  • Standard off the shelf parts to ensure easy long term serviceability (no special/proprietary parts).

Designed with safety in mind 

  • Keyed power switch (2 keys included)
  • Element power is physically disconnected with mechanical relays when elements are set to off (avoids SSR leakage current)
  • The safe start interlock feature does not allow the control panel to be powered on if an element or pump switch is in the on position
  • Watertight steel box enclosure
  • Uses parts that adhere to IP54 or IP65 protection rating to protect from dust and water
  • All external cable connectors are locking to avoid accidental disconnects during use

For all control panels the power must be protected with a GFI either in the power cord or in the circuit breaker installed in the circuit breaker panel. For more information see our section on control panel supply power. A power cord is not included and may be ordered separately.

*Before using two 5500W elements at the same time, check with your local electrical authority or your electrician to confirm that the additional power draw is allowed on your 50 amp circuit. The electrical code varies from location to location.
