Background
I bought my panel pre-assembled in 2014 from TheElectricBrewery. I have brewed with it 5-6 times a year up until this past year with no problems. My last brewday was in Feb 2019, again with no problems. Due to life getting in the way(and the lack of social gatherings) this past year I haven't brewed since then (roughly 10 months), so the panel has been sitting idle. I keep it unplugged from the powers source when not in use.

Problem
That brings us to today. I plug it in as normal and the PID's for the boil kettle and HLT are both dead/dark/unresponsive. The mash tun PID is still operational and functioning normally. All other components are functioning normally. I tested the power to each PID and confirmed that they are all receiving current. Diagnosing further I swapped the functioning mash tun PID with the non-functioning HLT PID. This confirmed that it is a bad PID as the functioning PID that was in the mash tun slot works in the HLT slot. Conversely the non-functioning PID that was in the HLT slot still does not work in the mash tun slot.

Question
I am going to order some new PID's to fix the issue. However, my question is how likely is it that two PID's would die at once? Do they go bad when sitting idle, i.e. it could have happened anytime during the past 10 months? Is there any significance to it being the two PID's that are in control of the heating elements (HLT and Boil kettle)? Just trying to understand the problem so I can prevent it next time(unless it really is just bad luck).

Hi and welcome to the forum!

To answer your question: The odds are two components (PIDs in this case) dying over 10 months is very low. It's just bad luck I'm afraid.

Replacements are here: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/collections/temperature-controllers/products/syl-2352-pid-temperature-controller

Cheers!

Thanks for the quick reply, Kal. Are the PID's the components in the panel most likely to fail? Just trying to line up my spares.

No, I wouldn't say they are. Like most solid state electronics stuff just fails sometimes. That said, I'm surprised you've had 2 PIDs go around the same time in less than 10 years. I don't think I've ever heard of that before. ( Time to buy a lottery ticket?? Wink )

Our panels are somewhat redundant in that the HLT and BOIL sides are mirror images so if something on one side goes during a brew day you can just swap cables and the brew day continues. Then replace the failed part as time permits. You can certainly order spare parts if you like, but I'm not sure of the value of doing so.
