I'm starting a thread on what I brew.

The first beer I made using Kal's system was the Electric Hop Candy Jr.

We smashed those kegs. I have a few bottles left.

Now I'm on to the Bohemian Pilsner. My wife cuts the grass, and she wanted a lawnmower beer.

Making the starter and sanitizing the yeast jars. I need to order a beaker...

Brew day coming when the yeast is ready!

Since I'm still brewing outside, I screwed in a pressure treated board between the carport risers for a place to hang the control panel. I also picked up a stainless steel table. It's a bit small, but all I could find locally.

After 2 days of fermenting. This will stay in the fermenters for 3 weeks. I'll be gone on a boat for that long. When I come back, I'll switch to secondary for a week, then put in a chest freezer for slow carbing and further aging.

Then, I'll brew another IPA.

I noticed your amp and volt meters do not seem to be working or maybe they're not connected?
Check out our troubleshooting guide here if you want to get things working: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25460

Cheers!

I've tried everything. I think I need to order new meters.

Hop stopper really does it's job!

When I added the whirlpool port, I knew I really wouldn't use it, but I found a GREAT use for it.

Right before I turned on the water to start chilling, I ran the wort through it for a few minutes to sanitize the chiller. When the wort first started going through, there was some hops going through the line. After a couple minutes of going through the hop stopper to the chiller, back to the boil kettle it cleared up.

So, it acts as a pre-filter. Pretty nifty.

I just ordered new meters through the store. I'll see if that helps.

Before you hook up the new meters I highly suggest you follow the systematic approach outlined here to test the transformers, AC/DC power supplies, and then the meters: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25460

Thanks for your order!

Kal

Thanks!

I'll def check everything out before I hook them up.

Since I work on a boat and I'm gone, my wife checks on things for me everyday. Had some wort in the airlock, and looks like the krausen has fell. Either way, it will be in primary for 10 more days until I get home to switch to secondary.

Video:

Then she cleaned the airlock for me. The second fermenter looks the same minus wort in the airlock.

Next I need to show her how to do transfer wort from primary to secondary for me while I'm at work lol. She loves beer btw. Drinks it more than I do.

Wort is clearing up! I have a week left before I can move it to secondary. In the pics you can see the jam nut to the spigot from the inside. I'll probably cheat and start drinking on a keg while I'm home and save the other for a month later.

This is with WLP800 Lager yeast fermented at 50F. 15 days in.

This is the malt I used. Everyone at my local brew club loves it.

Also like to add the OG was 1.046, ph 5.7.

FG 1.010
ABV 4.73%

I quick carbed a keg, the other is gonna sit another month or better.

It's really yummy now, very clear. The beer in the pic doesn't show the clarity because of glass condensation.

This keg will probably only make it a few days before it's gone.

Another brew days in the books!

I brewed Electric Hop Candy, Jr.

My OG was off because I still need to work on the sparging. Next time I'll hit it right.

OG: 1.040
ph 5.4

Brew stand setup:

Mash:

Finally picked up a Fizz - X wand. After cooling everything down, I used the wand for 120 seconds per carboy, then added yeast.

I still have the Pilsner in the fridges. So I'm just setting these in a dark place in the house. Our house stays at 68 degrees, so we should be ok.

Cool. Enjoy the Electric Hop Candy, Jr! I've changed over to brewing my newer Electric Creamsicle now in it's place, just because I like something new. Try it next if you like.

I'll give it a try for my next IPA. I'm thinking about barrel aging a stout. It's July, so maybe next month. That way it will be ready for winter.

It's not an IPA - another Pale Ale just like Electric Hop Candy Jr.

You also wouldn't want to brew either of these in August to be ready for winter - they're American hoppy styles that are best from grain to glass in less than 2 weeks. Don't age hoppy pale ales or IPAs. You want to drink them fresh. Mine typically are probably around 10 days from grain to keg, then carb'ed overnight at high pressure and served the next day. For complete details see the "notes/process" sections of the recipes.

Enjoy!

This is what happens when you don't mash out correctly.

OG: 1.040 FG: 1.010 ABV 3.94%

Time to try it again.

Lack of mashing out (going from alpha/beta rest to 168-172F) shouldn't do that. Something else happened if your OG of 1.040 was too low.

Talking to my brewmaster buddy, he said it was probably a yeast issue.

Still haven't fixed my volt / amp meters, but I did a sanitizing run today, brew day tomorrow! The humidity takes a toll on everything sitting on a shed. Wanted to make sure everything was tip top.

Another brew day in the books!

I brewed the Hop Candy Jr. again.

Here is the hop stopper doing its job:

Aerating the wort before pitching the yeast with a Fizz-X wand:
