I was brewing yesterday and while running the brew kettle, I first smelled burning wire and then saw smoke coming from the plug at the panel connection. I immediately shut everything down and unplugged everything. After searching though the control panel all the wires seemed connected well and nothing was burned/ melted inside the panel, only the plug. I've brewed 20 or so batches with no issues. Any idea what could have caused this? I've attached a pic of the inside of the plug showing the black wire completely melted.

Thanks!
Chris

Hi and welcome to the forum!

See our troubleshooting thread: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25460
See the section "One of my wires or parts in my control panel looks like it's melting!"

Replacement plugs are here: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/collections/plugs-connectors-receptacles/products/nema-l6-30-250vac-30a-twist-lock-electrical-plug

I don't recognize the plug type (it's not one we sell) and I don't see any orders from us using the email you've used here on the forum. Is this something you put together yourself sourcing your own parts? Most likely a loose screw connection where the black (hot) wire connects to the plug. The heat would have travelled up into the control panel receptacle too so make sure to check that as well. I would pull the corresponding wire out of the receptacle to make sure it's not charred. Make sure to tighten everything properly when re-installing.

Cheers!

Kal

I had the exact same issue a while back. It was basically cheap plug and receptacle. I think poor contact caused an increase in friction and heat. It could have been the wires had poor connection too. It's hard to say. I replaced the plug and receptacle with the ones Kal recommended and never had issue again.

My old thread for reference http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31579&highlight=

Thank you both very much! I will replace the plug with one from Kal as well as check and redo some of my internal wiring just to be sure. I bought the cord and plug from Brew Hardware because it went with the element I bought from them (one that unplugs from the the element from the outside of the kettle). My guess is it is something I did wrong and/or a cheap plug. Regardless both of your links are very helpful. Thanks again for this site Kal! I've been a regular lurker for several years.
