About to start my third batch. I'm getting there...I think. The process is not quite natural yet. The electric brewing is nice but I feel like a mad scientist with all these tubes and pumps, especially the last brew when I pumped boiling wort all over my leg.
The question: This batch is a Bells clone and I have whole hops (centennial) I'd like to try. I don't have the hop stopper, but rather a bent tube that works well collecting from the side of the kettle after I whirlpool (I did put a whirlpool port in). I have never used whole hops. Will they gum up the works during the boil? Or clog the tube? Do they float and can or should I scoop them out? Or...can I put the additions in grain bags and boil them that way and pull them out or will it lose something in flavor? The other thing is the dry hop addition midway through fermentation. Can I dry hop with whole hops? (I'm still using a carboy). Alternatively, my wife got me a Blichmann Hop Rocket for my birthday I've yet to use, was thinking of passing the boiled wort through this, then the chiller, then the whirlpool, but this is technically 0 minute addition, not dry hopping. Any help with these is appreciated!

Whole hops work fine. While it depends on your boil kettle setup they tend to be easier to use than pellet on any setup. If you used my boil kettle design and parts you don't need to worry about anything. They might float a bit at first. You don't need to take them out. I prefer not putting hops in any sort of bags as you'll get the best extraction that way. If someone's setup is prone to clogging they may use bags however.
You can certainly dry hop with whole hops. They do tend to clog in the neck of a carboy easier than pellet hops.
Pellet hops will yield about 10% more IBUs than one ounce of the same hop variety in whole form so you may want to use approx 10% more than the recipe calls for.
Good luck!

Thank you Kal, that's very helpful. Yeah, I wondered how I'm supposed to get those buggers out of the carboy after I siphon it. Did not know about hop utilization (if that's the proper term). Thank you!

Definitely be careful of whole hops in carboys - they can really bung things up. Good luck!
