I was working on coming up with this year's holiday brew and got to thinking - what is the most grain and what grist ratio have you used for a 20 gallon mash tun?
Mine is the RIS that Kal posted on here - 38.65 lbs of grain, 1.25 qt/lb.
The new holiday brew is slated for 48 lbs of grain, 1.25 qt/lb. I might have to dial that back and add some DME.

Another option to consider is sugar in the boil. All the big IIPAs and imperial stouts/porters I have made used sugar to bump the alcohol while maintaining fermentability.

I did not brew the original recipe that started this thread, but have a new "large batch" record today.
43.62 lbs of grain with a 1.25 qt/lb ratio. Total mash volume was about 18 gallons.
I could definitely have more grain and water in there and I would not be concerned at all.
