Using the same PIDs across all 3 units also simplifies the setup as the programming steps are the same and you have identical backup equipment across all 3 kettles.

A lot to be said for this! I have been using my controller for five years almost flawlessly, but during brew recently, the down button on my HLT PID quit working. The little mini push button failed. I was able to continue the brew day because I used the boil PID to finished the the mash and sparge.
The next day, I pulled the failed HLT PID and moved the MT PID over. I only monitor mash temps with the MT PID, but control mash temps with the HERMS coil in the HLT, so no big deal.
At my earliest convenience, I replaced the little mini push button in the failed PID and made it my MT PID. All is well. Having the "backup" (MT) PID left me with virtually zero down time.
Cheers!
