Hi all, thanks for adding me to the group. I'm new to electric brewing. I just built a EBIAB system. I noticed after my 4th batch with the new system that the coating on the electric element is wearing off. Most of the element looks like copper now. Is this normal/safe?

Hi and welcome to the forum Stephen.

What you are seeing is not normal. The elements we recommend and sell here do not do this: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/collections/heating-elements

If the elements are not cleaned properly over time a coating can build up to the point where eventually some of it might start to flake off, and the brewer thinks the element is peeling or falling apart. For cleaning info see here: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/pages/oxiclean-baby-or-free-oxygen-based-cleaner

What elements are you using?

Do you have any pictures?

Kal

This is the one I'm using. I can take a picture when I get home https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3500-Watt-240-Volt-HWD-Element-15010/205680992

I would recommend using our heating elements that are made for brewing. The heating rods are made from 804 stainless (stronger than shiny 304/316 stainless) and they also have a stainless base instead of iron so they will not rust without you having to use a sacrificial anode.

Complete details here: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/collections/heating-elements

More details in our heating element build guide too: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/heating-elements

Good luck!

Kal

It must be abnormal. A chemical reaction has occurred. It is best to replace it. Of course, I am not a professional, and I cannot give you professional advice, sorry.
