Hey everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I am finally going to make the plunge and buy some blinchmann kettles. They have a bunch of options on checkout and wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing (huge purchases here).

https://www.homebrewing.org/20-gallon-BoilerMaker-G2-Brew-Pot-by-Blichmann-Engineering_p_5095.html?AffId=95

I don't think I need them to do any holes because I'll be punching things already for the heating element and the herms coil, so making a couple other holes doesn't seem like a big deal.

My specific questions are:

HLT Kettle: Should I have them punch the whole for the whirlpool?

MT: Does anyone use the autosparge from blinchmann or do you do something else?

BK: Should I have them punch the whole for the whirlpool?

Any settings or configuration I should consider when ordering? Again, this a huge investment so I want to make sure I get it right.

Thanks in advance for all the advice!

Correct! They wouldn't be the right sized holes or in the right spots either

If building to my design, no. You won't be whirlpooling the HLT. That's something that some choose to do in their boil kettle.

I don't, but it's really up to you. My reasons for not using one are outlined here: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/mash-lauter-tun?page=3

A quote: "The Blichmann 'Auto Sparge' arm also includes a valve and floating ball that stops/starts the delivery of sparge water as required to ensure that the rate of flow into the Mash/Lauter Tun matches that leaving the Hot Liquor Tank. While an interesting concept, we find that matching rates is very easy to do by hand using our two pumps. Keeping the setup simple results in no chance of clogs and less parts to clean."

At the end of the day the choice is yours of course.

If you want to use a recirculating whirlpool using a pump (after boil) then having them punch a hole for a whirlpool that would be handy. I don't use one myself or do any sort of recirculation after the boil. People do a whirlpool to have the hop debris and other matter settle in the middle before emptying the boil kettle. The idea is you recirculate out and back in over a 15-30 period and a cone forms in the middle. You then drain from the edge with the regular dip tube where there's no debris, careful to not disturb the cone of debris. I prefer to not have to do a whirlpool that as sometimes I don't want to have to wait 15-30 mins because I don't want hops to steep that long. Instead, I use a Hop Stopper to filter so that I can start chilling immediately after the boil and lock in the hop flavours. 15-20 mins later my beer's in the fermenter and ready chilled, instead of just starting to chill.

While there are lots of different ways to brew, if building to my design, order the kettles 'bare'. No extra features other than the false bottom for the MLT.

I'm not a fan of their linear flow valve, so I'd replace those as well. Complete details here: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27425
That said, you can try them and decide for yourself and them swap them out later if you need to/want to.

Good luck!
