Hi there, I tried to make a similar vent setup for over my kettles but the 3-speed fan control switch trips the breaker if not used in high speed only. The wiring seems start forward and I purchased the same 6" vent. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? Thank you.

Assuming everything else is working ok, it may be a bad 3-speed fan control? Hard to pinpoint with limited information. Sorry!

Does it matter which black wire on the fan control is connected to the duplex outlet and which to the incoming black power cord wire? Fan control switch isn't labeled.

If the 3-speed fan control switch isn't labelled then it shouldn't matter.
