Is there any advantage to the double gang heading element? With the single gang available it seems like everyone would want a lower profile box on the outside of their kettle.

I used the single gang and did not have any problems, everything fit just fine.

Advantage is ease of building/assembly. You may find you have enough room in a single gang box, but odds are it'll be a bit tight. Depends on the box.

The other thing is that there's usually no need or desire to install the heating element lower in the kettle (the one thing that a single gang box gives you). In the boil kettle you don't want the heating element too low in order to aid natural convection when boiling. Also makes cleaning the element easier. If you use the Hop Stopper you'll need room for that anyway: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/hop-stopper

In the HLT you can install lower however as the water's recirculated.

I used a single box on my last setup. Worked fine and didn't see any drawbacks. I chose the single box for the more compact design. I didn't want a large double box on my keggles.
