When carbonating in the keg do you
1) attach the gas line to gas port and pressurize from the top down
or
2) attach the gas line to the liquid port and let the gas bubble up through the beer?

This is assuming no attempt to speed carbonation by over pressurizing.

I usually pressurize from the top down, at the final pressure. I just hook the keg up and wait 7 days or so.

If I am trying to force things and get the keg carbonated faster, I will start with the gas line on the liquid port at a higher pressure and roll the keg around, then drop the pressure down to serving pressure, and swap over to the gar port and try it in a day or so.

I did use the liquid post the other day on an empty keg to flush out all the O2 and replace with CO2 before I filled with beer.

I do the same.

I find it takes a good 2 weeks for the beer to mellow a bit regardless of style so I like the set and forget method. I never adjust my regulator pressure.

Does everyone leave the CO2 turned on at serving pressure after the keg has been fully carbed or do you turn it on and off on the days that your are pouring several?

I had been wondering if the pressures are balanced are you losing gas or will it keep carbing on?

My question comes from thinking about the bottle being on the back of a kegerator where you would constantly need to roll it away from the wall to turn it on and off?? Of course I would most likely choose to have the bottle inside the unit if there is sufficient room.

Some people do it differently, but I run a balanced system such that I simply hook up the gas at serving pressure and leave it on all the time.

Not sure I follow. If it's a balanced setup the beer will hit a certain volume of CO2 (level of carbonation) and stay there. You're using gas to carb and push the beer. As the beer is poured, the space is replaced with CO2.

Kal,

Okay that was what I was thinking once its hit it's target. I guess you'd only lose gas if there was a small leak at a connection
I appreciate the response I need a reality check sometimes.
