Does anyone know what standard brewhouse efficiency they use in magazine recipes? Once in a while I like a recipe I see in the Brew Your Own mag and when I brew it as written, my OG is waaaay higher than written. If I knew that the mags base their recipes on, say 65% efficiency - I could reduced my grain bill accordingly.

Any clues?

See the "recipe standardization" section of their masthead in BYO. They mention efficiencies, but not usually brewhouse as that is really system specific. Instead, they mention 65% mash extraction efficiency and give the math behind it.

That's it! I knew I had seen it somewhere. Pardon the noob question, but what is the mash efficiency of our setup? Is there a quantifiable relationship between brewhouse efficiency and mash efficiency?

As an aside I'm trying to brew Jamil's extra yellow and am trying to figure if I need 1.25qt/lb or 1.5. Anyone brew his American Lager?

Take a look here: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/FAQ#What_sort_of_efficiency_do_you_achieve_with_your_setup_

mash (or conversion) efficiency is part of brewhouse efficiency:

I haven't, but I usually do 1.5 or higher for most lagers I want to be lighter bodied.

Good luck!
