I am considering using the system for a kettle sour. My system is a close clone of Kal's. I added a whirlpool port in the boil kettle. I am concerned about leaving an acidic wort in the kettle for a couple of days because of the corrosion it might cause on the base of the heating element. I also am curious if people recirculate the wort the entire time during the kettle sour. Anything else I should be aware of?

If you are using our heating elements made for brewing ( see: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/stainless-steel-heating-elements ) I would not be concerned with the base of the element as it's 304 stainless, same as most stainless kettles. The grey rods on our elements are 804 stainless which is even more resilient.

If you're using a different element that has a base not made out of stainless that can rust (like the popular Camco 02963) then you may get some corrosion, maybe, but not rust. An acid will actually remove rust. I'm not sure I'd be concerned about only a day or two of contact if. If anything, it'll clean your element base. Wink

I have the older heating elements from the website before you switched to the stainless steel bases.
