Proper control of water is an important step to brewing any style of beer consistently and successfully. It's yet another aspect in brewing that can take a beer from 'good' to 'great'.
The guides and books I've come across I find are overly confusing or gloss over the actual "how to" parts and only present complex theory. My guide attempts to fix all that. No Chemistry at all, no complex math. Just what to do when, and why, to correctly adjust your water to target any style of beer imaginable.
Want to brew a delicate Kölsch, a hoppy American IPA, a British Bitter, or the latest New England IPA? This guide will give you the target numbers and show you step by step how to get there with the water you have today.

Comments welcome!
Cheers!

What I have done is save a copy of the EZ water calc as "EZ water ... HOPPY" .
Now insert a few rows at row 55 (below the blue box "results". )
Add a row of the 'Target Numbers":
Code: | TARGET 100 18 16 200 100 |
the next row, OVERAGE, will do a simple calculation. In cell D56 enter this:
Do this same for the rest of the cells below your TARGET:
TARGET 100 18 16 200 100
OVERAGE 45 4 1 9 7
SO now as I change the additions, I can see the results
Now just use that version for Hoppy beers. Make sure to change the "Mash Water" and sparge water per your grist and batch size.
I have another Excel tab for that:
Batch size 5.5 Gallons
Post Boil 6 Gallons
Grist: 9.35 Pounds
"Mash thickness" 1.25 Inches
boil time 60 minutes
Strike Water 3.7 gallons
Boil Wort 7.9 gallons
Sparge Water 5.4 gallons
The values that are underline are calculated
For Strike enter: Code: | =ROUNDUP((B4*B3/4)+0.22+0.5,1) |
For Sparge enter : Code: | =ROUNDUP(B7+B8-B6,1) |
I hope this makes sense...
Jeff

OK... now with pictures:
The Target row is "hard coded" values for theis version of the EZ water: Hoppy
The Overage Row is a simple calculation to show the overage over the RESULTS. Very handle to see the change as you dial in different amounts of minerals.
And the other tab calculates STRIKE and SPARGE amounts (do this first):
And those values are utilized back on the EZ Water tab:
