This has happened lately, but not all the time..

when its time to mashout, i raise the temp of the HLT on the PID to 170. ( my mash runs with a 2 degree differential ) to achieve my 168 mashout temp. the HLT temp rises as expected but when the temp reaches about 165 i get circulation problems through the coil.

the pump is running and primed but no circulation. i turn off the pump and then turn it back on and it pumps for about 10 to 15 seconds then no more suction. the hose has a little "jump" and then its not working. only happens during mashout and not all the time

any ideas?

thanks

Strange, as the warmer it gets, the better the flow is.

What pump are you using?
What do you have your mill gap set to?
What mash kettle/false bottom do you have?

Hi Kal

its not the mash that stops flowing its the HLT water through the coil

March pumps

I don't understand. The HLT water does not flow through the HERMS coil. Are you talking about something else? Is your setup different?

not sure but it sounds like the pump is losing its magnetic hold on the head, this happens to me a lot at warmer temps, I have to reduce the ball valve and it works

I'd take the pump head apart to make there's nothing weird/stuck/broken.

Same thing happened yesterday. At about 162 degrees the HLT pump shut down, ( motor running; impeller not spinning). Took the pump apart and it had some water deposits on the impeller but it spun nicely. Cleaned it up, put it back together and ran a test this morning with just water.. At 160 the impeller stopped spinning. I ordered a new impeller this afternoon. We'll see if that is the problem.

thanks for the suggestions

Just to add. I get that with my water pump at any time in the process. I have to keep the output valve more closed than I have to on the wort pump (still mostly open). I just assumed it was a little more temperamental.

Weird. If these are genuine March brand pumps I'd contact them. In the past whenever people have had issues with them (fairly rare I'm told) they've been very good at replacing them/fixing them I'm told. There used to be a guy from March (Walter) who frequented HomeBrewTalk that members could contact and he'd look after everything. Not sure he's still around.

Mine are march center inlet (poly head). It really doesn't affect me much. I know where to put my valve and that has stopped the issue for the most part. Early on when I had my system I did do an early mashout as my HLT temp was much higher than the PID was seeing.

I have the chugger pumps and after close inspection the issue is not the impeller, its the magnet and its alignment, my magnet slightly wobbles and you can feel it in your hand when plugged in, I also found that its an 1/8" from the plate when assembled

I have march pumps.. over 6 years old and closing in on 200 batches. I'll install the new impeller and go from there.

Update on March pump problem..

Hans at March pumps suggested a new impeller, he said they can wear out and at higher temps loose magnetic contact as suggested earlier. I replaced the impeller, brewed a batch today and everything worked as expected.
