HLT to MT PID control switch

Has there been any thought of adding a switch to the control panel to toggle PID control between the HLT and the MT? This would allow the MT probe to control the temp in the HLT when mashing. It would require an extra switch for the control panel, but would certainly offer some additional control.

Welcome to the forum!

We already control the temp in the HLT and the MLT. The HLT is the "master" and the MLT follows. What are you trying to do exactly? Why would you want the HLT to be different than the MLT?

If you did, you'd need more than a switch. You'd need completely separate PIDs, temp probes, and heat sources.

Hi Kal,

Thanks for the reply. I may not be explaining it right. I saw a guy's system (based on Electric Brewery) on You Tube. In his build he added a switch that allowed him to control the temperature in the HLT via the proble in the MT. (The effect of physically switching the location of the probes). If I can find his video I can post you the link. BTW: I love my 50amp control panel, have 4 batches so far, still learning the system and working some bugs out.

For what it's worth, decoupling this like isn't something I'd recommend. You do control the MLT temp through the HLT temp - they're directly connected but I feel it's better/safer to control the heat source (HLT) directly as the flow there never stops if you follow my design (the water is constantly recirculated). Decoupling too far can lead to serious issues if you ever have problems with flow in the MLT where the HLT tries to compensate. While you shouldn't have flow issues if you use my recommended parts and process, not everyone does, so having a stuck flow in the MLT could lead to dangerous temp conditions in the HLT if you decouple like this.

Decoupling like that also does not offer any advantages as far as I can see, but I've seen some people do it probably because they think it's better to control the mash more "directly". But it doesn't work that way - you're heating the HLT to whatever you want the mash to be and the mash simply follows.

That said, people will often built their setups differently/have a different brewing process. Feel free to use whatever works best for you! Good luck!

I had that thought the other day using the mash temp probe to control the pid for the hlt heating element, anyone tried this?
