Probably just a coincidence. I'm assuming the heating elements were fully submerged during the entire period? They must always be submerged when heating.
I'm assuming you're using our elements. PBW in water won't do anything to our elements. Pro brewers use a stronger cleaners than PBW on our elements without any issues. These elements are made from 804 stainless which is considerably stronger and more corrosion resistant than the standard 304/316 stainless that the rest of your brewing equipment is made from (and also in contact with the cleaner).

Specifically the section: "My heating element is not firing at all! (or firing continuously)"
That'll walk you through figuring where the issue is.
