Hi Guys,

Plastic conical fermenters seem to be getting cheaper.
There is a local manufacturer who makes them for USD265 for a 30L.
They are a plastic conical drum in a stainless frame with 2 stainless valves.

My concern was that the drum part is rotationally moulded and not injection moulded like a brewing bucket.
The porosity/coefficient of friction on rotationally moulded items is much higher than injection moulded items.

Is this an issue for fermentation? Has anyone had experience with these?
Or am I better to save for a stainless one?

Ian

Hi Ian,

Read here: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/brew-day-step-by-step?page=11

The most important take-away is:

"Different brewers will use different types of fermentation vessels based mostly on personal preference and convenience, not because one necessarily makes better beer than another."

I brew mostly is $20-25 food grade buckets because that works for my brewing process. Easy to clean, inexpensive, and sturdy. I don't bulk age in them. If I have to bulk age, I use a stainless keg or a glass carboy.

You should choose whatever's best for your brewing process. There is no "one best" fermenter as that's illogical. It all depends on your process.

That said, I personally would not spend that kind of money on a plastic conical.

Kal

In that price range, you could go with http://www.ssbrewtech.com/collections/fermenters/products/brewbucket for a little cheaper or for a little more https://conical-fermenter.com/7.3-Gallon-Fermenter.html.

^edit. Just noticed you were in NZ. I would suspect you may be able to still get the induction tanks to use as fermenters, since they are intended for farming, but no clue as to what the price would be.
