With full readings in just one second, Thermapen ONE is in a category by itself when it comes to “instant-read” thermometers. Thermapen ONE achieves a new standard of accuracy, as well—now accurate to ±0.5°F (±0.3°C)—so you know your readings are correct. To achieve this level of performance without resorting to algorithms or mathematical adjustments, Thermapen ONE truly pushes the boundaries of sensor and electronic measurement engineering.
- New: Unparalleled speed with full temperature readings in less than one second
- New: Industry leading accuracy to half a degree: ± 0.5°F (±0.3°C)
- New: Brighter intelligent backlight display automatically illuminates in low-light and when the sensor window is covered
- New: Easy access battery housing uses one common AAA battery for a 2,000-hour battery life
- New: Five-year warranty
- Motion-Sensing Sleep and Wake Mode: intuitively turns on and off—or when picked up or in use and off when set down to save battery
- Patented 360° auto-rotating display uses accelerometer technology to intuitively turn right-side up
- Shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof with an IP67 rating for water-tight seals
- Foldaway design protects probe when not in use
- Polygiene Biomaster Antimicrobial Silver Ion Technology reduces microbial growth
- Hand washable
- Display temperatures in °F or °C, 1° or 0.1° resolution
- Each Thermapen ONE includes a NIST-traceable calibration certificate verifying accuracy to national standards
The new Thermapen ONE includes professional level features at an affordable price, including an auto-rotating display, which uses accelerometer technology to detect screen motion/orientation for use in either hand (similar to smartphone orientation); a battery-saving sleep/wake mode; fully waterproof IP67 design; new brighter automatic backlight for use at night or in low light; 2,000-hour battery life using one AAA battery with new easy-access battery housing; and included NIST-traceable calibration certificate for increased confidence in its performance. Thermapen ONE lets everyone “seek perfection” when cooking at home, in the BBQ pit, or for daily use in professional restaurants, to measuring critical temperatures in labs, food processing plants, grocery stores, and more.
----------
What I like: Out of all these improvements, the ones I'm most interested in include the intelligent backlight (it's hard to see the non-backlit one sometimes in some lighting), the motion sensing sleep mode (no need to open and close it constantly when taking measurements), and the fact that it uses a standard AAA battery instead of a CR2032 (3V) lithium coin cell (that said, I've yet to replace the CR2032 battery on either of my original ThermaPens and I've had them for years).
As with the previous versions of the Thermapen, it's easy-to-use, quick display can accurately measure temperatures extreme fast (1 second here as compared to 3 seconds or less with the classic ThermaPen). I don't find the speed on the classic to be an issue however.

ThermoWorks has extended their Infrared Thermometer sale to include many different models at different price points.
I use the cheapest one myself and find it really handy around the house for measuring the temperature of things for which you can't (or it's unsafe)
to use a probe thermometer. Plus, it has a laser pointer. How cool is that?
You can measure temperatures of liquids too, but make sure to stir the liquid fairly well to bring the surface temperature up to the same as the internal (if the liquid's not in motion).
You have to watch what you are trying to take a reading of as the accuracy depends on the emissivity of the material. Emissivity is just the opposite of reflectivity, so most polished metal will have a very high reflectivity but low emissivity, making them very difficult to measuring using an IR gun. To get around this, if possible, you can put some electrical tape on the surface and measure the temp of it. Electrical tape is highly emissive.
Some brewers will use them to measure the temperature of their grain to calculate their strike water temp (those brewers without semi-automated setups like ours).

Just got an open box in Purple for my wife. (not that it won't travel to the brewery occasionally to calibrate things).

Cool!
For me it was the opposite: My wife was stealing mine from the brewery (since I use it during fermentation and other times quite a bit) so I ended up buying her own as I could never find it when I needed it...
