I talked with a brewer who has a three tiered system and RIMS set-up. He uses an insulated mash tun. Are there any advantages to using an insulated mash tun for an electric set-up (HERMS) like the one on this website?

Not really.

If your tun isn't insulated your heating element that heats the mash (either through HERMS in the HLT or a RIMS tube) will simply have to fire a bit more often. The cost difference in electricity is probably pretty negligible.

There may be cases where if you brew in extreme cold that the heating element can't keep up but otherwise I don't see why you'd want to insulate your tun for a recirculating setup if your flow is adequate/fast enough to keep the mash at temp.

Cheers,

Kal
