I'm considering building an electric setup, but I will be limited to the 30amp control panel. I think this will be fine, but I was curious if anyone could tell me how long it would take to heat my sparge water after mashing using a herms coil in the HTL.
So basically, I want to know how long it will take to heat 10 gallons of water from 155 degrees to 175 degrees. I know there are some numbers on the site but I was wondering if anyone could give me some times from their brew day.

I just brewed using this system for the first time on Sunday. I wish I had taken better notes on details like that. We're you asking how long it takes the water in the hlt to go from 155 to 175 or the temperature in the mash tun to make that change. The hlt will obviously come up to temp much faster then the mash tun will. I believe a good estimate is about 2 degrees per min to get the hlt temp up. Others could probably give you more detailed info since they have done more batches.

Heat 20 gallons of strike water from 70F to 155F: 45 minutes
Bring 14 gallons of wort from 150F to boil: 23 minutes
Unlike conventional gas burners where heat is applied from below, an immersed electric heating element is 100% efficient as all of the heat is transferred to the surrounding liquid. With a gas burner 50-80% of the heat bounces off the bottom of the kettle and is lost. |
So to take 10 gallons up 20 degrees would take: 10 gallons x 20 degrees x 1.6 seconds = 320 seconds.
