So for a bit of background on myself, I am a dentist. This link is very appropriate then but I am curious what this is!

http://www.counselheal.com/articles/8894/20140305/beer-ingredient-prevent-tooth-decay-gum-disease.htm

I asked my local brew shop what a "bract" was in more detail than, a part of the hop leaf. The chemical that is important might be a polyphenol. Does anyone have any knowledge of this and can this be used for beer making, or is it just junk.

Thanks!

Bracts are parts of a plant, not specific to hops:

Details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bract

They're saying you'd have to use the hop leaves somehow as well. Not sure you'd want all that vegetal matter in your beer, or if you could actually use the leaves as par of beer making.

All they're saying is that there's antioxidant polyphenols in the leaves that could help fight cavities and gum disease. How these would get used is a whole other issue.

This article says "Every year, farmers harvest about 30,000 tons of hops in the United States, but the bracts are not used for making beer and are discarded. Thus, there is potentially a large amount of bracts that could be repurposed for dental applications.":

http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/pressroom/presspacs/2014/acs-presspac-march-5-2014/Hop-leaves-discarded-in-beer-brewing-have-substances-that-could-fight-dental-diseases.html

Their subject for the article is more accurate: "Hop leaves — discarded in beer brewing — have substances that could fight dental diseases".

The one you linked to has an inaccurate title where they say "Beer Ingredient May Prevent Tooth Decay, Gum Disease" as hop leaves are not a beer ingredient.

Whether any of this is true or has any value, I have no idea.

I'd rather chew on some hop leaves at my next dental cleaning than some of the other treatments however! Wink

Thanks for the insight! Articles seldom are what they seem. Most people would agree with part about chewing on a plant as opposed to visiting the dentist!
