I'm building my basement setup and have some hose but wanted to order more. Using the link Kal provides in his build for 1/2" id and 7/8" od hose on Amazon I come up with 25' of hose costing $137.45 OUCH! Free shipping. Hardness is 50 duro. Amazon stuff

I did some Google searching and came up with a medical site for silicone hose 1/2" id and 7/8" od with 25' of it costing only $86.56. Free shipping. Hardness is 60 duro.
[url="http://www.pawbio.com/sfm3-6650.html#.UuL2OBDnbRY"]this stuff[/url]

So my obvious question is will this medical grade hose work? Not sure if 50 vs. 60 duro is a big difference or not. Pic of hose in upper right looks like regular white silicone hose. Of course the office to this place is in NJ and they are closed until Monday so can't call them with questions. Such a huge price difference makes me want to try it. Opinions??

Sorry but for some reason I'm not speaking BBCode tonight. No idea why my links are working properly.

Well, that all depends on who you ask Smile

I have not priced out 1/2" ID x 7/8" OD tube, mostly because of what you have discovered. Here are prices for the 1/2" ID x 3/4" OD tubing that I have:

$2.10 http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?cPath=178_59_549&products_id=10014
$1.99 http://stainlessbrewing.3dcartstores.com/Silicone-Tubing_p_136.html
$2.25 http://brewhardware.com/accessories-62/118-silicone5 (the clear stuff)
$2.20 http://www.brewershardware.com/silicone-hose-1-2.html (the not as clear stuff)

Now, Bobby at BrewHardware touts his *very clear* as the clearest he's ever seen, and they are pretty translucent, I have no idea if they are more or less clear than anyone else's are. I do know that Bobby has great advice and will answer questions when you ask them, a plus in his column if you ask me.

I posted the same question on HBT and his comment on the 7/8" line is that it's a waste of money.

I'm in Ireland, but bought my hosing off eBay in the uk via this link. It's on par with the hosing in Kal's setup.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silicone-Dairy-Tubing-Milking-Transfer-Hose-12mm-ID-x-21mm-OD-x-20mtrs-BNIB-/221180341975?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item337f602ed7

Not sure if shipping and conversion costs will be within your budget though.

Thing to note though is that they market it as dairy tubing this side of the pond. So you might want to look at dairy equipment suppliers in the US instead of homebrew stores. Hope this helps.

Just stick with the stuff rmoody pointed out that's just over $2 per ft. That price you got is almost enough to by the Silbrade tubing. Almost.

OK, will listen to everyone who says Kal's recommendation of 7/8" outside diameter isn't necessary and go with 3/4".

From rmoody's list brewhardware doesn't carry 1.5" tri-clamps that I also need to they are out and stainless brewing doesn't carry ptfe gaskets so scratched them as well. Went with brewershardware.com as they had everything I needed and since I bought 25' of hose their price per foot dropped to $2.05; whoo hoo!

Just remember - never put that silicone under pressure from your household water supply. Not that I personally know what happens when you do... Mr. Green

The translucent blue looks off white and not blue at all to me! Slightly less than .5 inches and you get roughly 65 feet of hose for $75 U.S. seems like a pretty good deal. Alas, that's there and not here in the U.S.

Damn it... I was going based on this page and thought I could hook the silicone to a cold water faucet using garden hose connectors. Mind you I was going to use it for a plate chiller and not just to pour water from the faucet into the HLT but based on that page didn't think it mattered. I imagine the 7/8" silicone is the same as the 3/4" silicone in this regard as the silicone is too soft to use as a hose regardless of the wall thickness. Oh well, I probably needed another 10' of the silicone I just ordered even without using it for the water connection - so now I have some extra. Garden hose is probably cheaper anyway.

Yep, garden hose is the better choice. And along those lines, it you want one to use in your brewery setup that won't kink and stays flexible when it's cold, the Tuff-Guard hoses are nice. Not cheap but nice.

I use a 25' in the brewery (garage) and we have a 100' out in the yard that keeps SWMBO happy since it NEVER kinks...

I have a Camco 22833 Premium 5/8"ID Drinking Water Hoses, not sure if it means anything getting drinking hoses but for the water coming in and my plate chiller thats what I bought, stiffer than hell cold or warm though

Regarding that Tuff-Guard hose I should have been clear - I don't use that to fill my HLT.

I ended up getting 2 of the Camco 22823 hoses which I believe is the same but only 10' long as my chiller faucet to the plate chiller isn't that far away. It is stiff though as you stated but we deal with that.

As far as 3/4" v. 7/8" silicone hose we bought all 7/8" and glad we did. Anyone who says this stuff is the same is just wrong. The 7/8" NEVER kinks whereas when we started brewing on a system like ours they used 3/4" hose and it kinked all the time where it connected to the pumps. The 7/8" is hella expensive but we have found it to be worth the fortune we paid for it.
