So... I am building a modified Kal clone in my basement. A few months ago my friends and I swore we saw a bat while we were playing video games in my basement. We think we plugged the hole it went in and we haven't seen, nor heard, it since. But the question always remained; do I have a bat in my basement?
Fast forward to about 20 minutes ago.
I just got the tags for my panel and so I am in my basement installing them and putting the final touches on my control panel. I finish that and walk over to what is going to be my brewing area. I had also just got my second heating element so I was test fitting it in my boil kettle when I looked in my HLT for reference (as the element is already installed in there)... And there was a ****** bat in my Hot Liquor Tank.
I covered the HLT with a lid and tied the lid down. Knowing that bats can crawl through tight places I put a bucket with a couple gallons of water on top of the lid.
So here I sit typing this post, I have a bat in my HLT that I need to get out (and probably kill)... Now I am wondering what I should do?
Also, I am looking for suggestions for my next brew... I'm thinking a very red amber ale called "Vampire Ale"...
TL;DR: I HAVE A ****** BAT IN MY HLT

Use a bungee cord and secure the lid down. Take the HLT outside and remove the lid. Step back and wait 5. It will leave.

Agreed with Ben58 - bats do a great job of killing insects that you don't want so try to keep it alive.
At dusk, sit outside of your house to see where they are coming out and then patch the hole.

Try as I may, I can't seem to find Guano in my adjunct library on BeerSmith2.

I'm thinking a thorough PBW hot wash is in order... Or maybe several of them...
Bat Dung Dunkel anyone?

Catching a bat is how I met the woman I would marry years later. There was a bat in her office building and everyone in the building bolted into their offices, locking the doors. She came to my office, in a trailer, and asked if I could catch it. I went into her building, located the beast, asked for a large empty jar and a piece of cardboard. I put the jar over the bat, slipped the cardboard between the wall and the bat and presto, one flying rodent taken outside and released. She told me years later that releasing the bat made a large impression on her.

Bats are mammals and good creatures. Thanks for releasing it and not killing it.

+1. Not sure why people are scared of them. No different than any other creature. Catch and release is always best when you can.

I don't like anything that flys indoors. It goes back to childhood and the birds that would find their way into the vent stack, sneak into the dropped ceiling and then come flying out of the closet at me when I was in bed. Totally freaky!

No where, ever, on any beer forum or blog am I going to see a headline that beats "I have a bat in my HLT".
Post of the year.
Well done by the way on handling the situation with aplomb.
Cheers!

This persuaded me to get a bat house. I'm going to provide a little home for bats in the backyard to live and eat my mosquitoes

+1 Kellzey, I'm glad I could inspire you. I plan on building/buying one in the very near future. Incidentally, I can't look in any of my kettles, buckets or even paper bags in my basement without a little tinge of panic. LOL
