They picked a good spot to go to capture wild yeast. I put out a malt-agar petri dish in my basement and got nothing.

The historical characterization I don't think quite gives the ancient brewers the credit they deserve. While they didn't know yeast as a microorganism, they did have some concept of putting new brewing vessels next to older functioning ones to transfer the magic.
