|
|
I brought my control box to a waterjet cutter to cut the holes for me.
Unfortunately, he couldn't do the bottom of the box for the power receptacle holes, because the height from the cutting head to the support deck was shorter than the 16" height of the box, but he was able to cut the front panel and the top removeable panel for mounting the heat sink.
I think I saved myself a lot of aggravation getting everything straight and perfect on the front. There were so many holes that any mistake could have really pissed me off.
This waterjet cutter has a super-precise tolerance. Nice smooth cuts and sharp corners...
Best part was the price... $50!
Here are some pics...

That is very nice work! That machine does some very tight tolerances, I had my false stainless bottom made custom and I believe they used the same type of machine. It was only $80 delivered. I wish I owned one, I would be a star in the home Brewing community, LOL.

I'm in the process of locating a waterjet cutting operation in the Hamilton area. My brother used to work for a company that essentially invented the thing. Anyway, his boss was bought out by Flow International and as time went by, he opened his own shop in Winona. My brother is getting me his number and hopefully when my panel arrives, I'll take it there and get it cut. And a huge thanks for the Cadd file, makes my life easier!

OMG, so envious! Living in norway, I feel like I'm stuck in the stone age! If these kinds of sevices exist, they're not well advertised.
It was fun to make the panel myself, but I would have gladly gone the hi-tech route! Kudos for sharing the audocad file!

I contacted a waterjet cutter outfit near Worcester, MA and the sales guy seemed all excited and said, "Oh, no job is too small!". Apparently, that wasn't the case, as I sent him the autocad files and some pics, but haven't heard back in 2 weeks. Time to break out the drill press . . .

I am picking my panel up from a waterjet cutter this week ($75). Same thing - could not cut bottom. But this will save me a ton of grief and frustration - I expect that when I start wiring. Thanks for posting the autocad files!!!

Just a note... after you paint, you will have to run a dremel and drum sander on the inside of the round holes. The paint adds enough thickness that it's really tight. LOL
I had to file one of the square holes for the AMP meter (or volt meter) because the hole was slightly undersized. But just a few strokes with flat file around all edges and it fit right in (tight).

I never thought about this! I happen to have a custom fab company down the road from me too! I just fired off an email asking if they are can do this and if so how much. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Still impressed by this! But just looking over the photo, is the hole for the blue power lamp a bit higher than the other LEDs on the same row?

I must be going to the wrong kind of shop - I have received quotes of between $165 - $175 for the front panel alone! One place would also do the bottom panel cuts for $130, too - yikes!

As a follow up, can anyone share the name of the waterjet cutters they have used? I'd love to drop my panel off (I'm in Western MA), but I don't think postage would be too expensive for just the front panel. Thanks!

He can only do the front. The bottom case is too deep for his cutting table.

This is all the way across country, so probably not the best economically, but the guy here made a part for his water jet just so he could cut the bottom for me. He cut the front, top plate (which I hadn't fixed to the top yet), and the bottom. He is a former professional brewer (at Widmer and others) and was excited about the project.
