i'm toying with not putting the alarm connection on the Mash PID.. and using the space for something else.. it gives a running assessment of the mash temp but for what reason would you use the alarm?

You could use it to know when the mash has reached mash temp, mashout temp or a step temp along the way.

For $2-3 the alarm switch was worth adding IMHO and gives flexibility. It also makes the panel look balanced.

When the HLT has reached target temp, it will take some time for the mash to reach the same temp, so a separate alarm makes sense.

I wonder if the MLT alarm could also be connected to trigger the timer, so that mash steps are timed from the point they reach temperature.

silversppons, what do you have in mind as a replacement for the mlt alarm switch?

With an average 10 gallon batch with 16-18 lbs of grain and strike water at strike temp, it takes about 10 minutes to get back up to mash temp after doughing in. (The temp drops about 10 degrees because of the 'cool' grain).

Right now i do single infusion mash in a cooler and have a fully immersible probe attached to the PID to monitor the temp over the period of the mash. i think i'll put it in as Kal said to balance of the display and maybe for future uses.
