So the meter I have has 5 wires. It did not come with instuctions so I popped of the back to check for something.

It has 5 wire connections vs. 4 on Kal's diagram. Can someone translate for me so I don't cook this sucker.

Also is it bad that it says 12v and not 5 volt?

Probably. Are you sure you got the correct meter?

If you're using at least a 12v AC transformer, and the same AC/DC converter as in Kal's instructions, then using 12V will not be a problem, even if you have a 5V ammeter, since they are powered independently. Just be sure to screw the power supply to it's lowest setting before powering on, as Kal describes in his instructions, and then slowly turn until the meter reaches the desired brightness.

Connections:
The two ~ pins (middle and rightmost, pin 3 and 5 counting from the left) connect to the HOT A and HOT B, as shown in Kal's diagram (polarity is not important.)
The + pin (pin 1) connects to the + DC on the variable DC power supply.
The - pin (pin 2) connects to the - DC (GND) on the variable DC power supply.

It's just as Kal describes, only instead of connecting HOT B to pin 4 (unused) you connect it pin 5.
