It is the hopstopper, just like Kal's. Right now it is a big green, hoppy mess, but certianly no worse than what Kal has on the main site. Total of about 5.5 oz of hops in the boil.

i am using a keggle, and with the shape of the bottom, without the proper pickup, you can leave a lot behind. That is why I asked. I am going to use a hop spider and be able to pull the hops out before sending it through the cfc.

Congrats! 92% is a great score. Must be a great feeling to have the EB working.

Thanks! It does feel great! I am very happy with 92%, I just need to get proficient with using it.

rosenjm wrote: | Sweet! First brew day down! 92% efficiency, not quite as good as Kal's 95%, but I'm working on it. Everything went smoothly. Only surprise is I lost about 1.5 gallons in the BK. I had calculated for a 6 gallon batch, put 7 in the BK and had a hair under 6 at the end of the boil. When I pumped it through the chiller and into the fermenter, I ended up with about 4.5 gallons in the primary. I was surprised at how much was left in the BK, maybe .75-1 gal. With about .5 gal lost in the chiller, that is about right I suppose.
Kal, does that jive with what you are getting, or am I doing something wrong? |
The only thing I can think of is one issue I had with my first few batches: The hopstopper's so efficient (high flow rate is possible) that I was sucking air from the top of it instead of wort. So it left a gallon or so behind. As the wort level in the BK gets to the hight of the hopstopper, slow down your flow rate.

Thanks, that sounds about right. Once the top of the hopstopper was exposed, the pump started drawing in air and I couldn't get it to draw suction after that. I had it throttled back pretty good through the CFC to maintain my 65F output. I'll have to remember to throttle it way back for those last few gallons. I also noticed that I misplaced a decimal point and calculated for .1 gal loss to the trub and chiller vice 1 gal. That, combined with Kal's advice would have put me much closer to 6 gal in the primary.

For what it's worth, my first few batches were 92-93% efficiency too. Now it's consistently 95%. Good work!

It is worth a lot, thanks. Putting together a recipe for the next run. Is it possible to make too much beer?

Well I think I can finally say the IWH Electric Brewery is 100% complete and working! The last holdout, the non-functioning amp meter, has been fixed (finally) and everything is done! I had to order 3 amp meters before I finally got one that worked. Third time's a charm. Time to go celebrate with a home-brew!

Done already?! I've just started the climb, and you're already at the top! Did you get a refund for the 2 duff meters?

I did get a refund the bad meters, although the cost to ship them back to China was about as much as I paid for them. It is the principle I guess...

Thanks! The only thing I don't like about it is having to look at it sitting there not doing anything 6 of the 7 days each week!
