We use the 50 amp control panel for our pilot system at a small commercial brewery. Panel is probably 5-6 years old now. A week back, we turned panel on overnight to heat our mash water like we normally do and when we came in, in the morning, the panel had shut off. Upon inspection, we found that the 50 Amp receptacle in the wall was scorched and partially melted. Obviously, something went haywire and we generated some heat.

We have a back up cord and plug and we used that to plug the panel in to another outlet and we still cannot get it to turn on. A visual inspection of the interior workings of the panel shows no obvious damage. Any insight as to what we might need to fix/replace to get this panel working again? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Chris,

Poor connections on a wall outlet will not damage a panel 10+ feet down down a power cord. So the good news is the panel should not be damaged from that. Are you sure that the new outlet is wired correctly and that the panel has all element and pump switches in the OFF position? The panel will not turn on otherwise (for safety reasons - it's part of the design).

For why the original outlet melted, it's most likely from bad wiring or a poor connection. See here :

Did you figure out where the issue was Chris?

"Upon inspection, we found that the 50 Amp receptacle in the wall was scorched and partially melted."

Were any of the 240V wires outside the receptacle screws?

Scary, considering what might have happened/what could have happened.
