This may be covered elsewhere so apologies if this duplicates another thread.

Kal's system has the BK heating element spread out a bit from what looks like the normal factory design. Did this get torqued on in a vice and pulled apart? I assume it's to make cleaning it easier, and to maybe spread the heat over a larger area to reduce potential for carmelizing the wort?

Curious how the element was spread apart safely without breaking or impacting it, and what brushes, or tools you use to properly and safely clean it?

Cheers,

A[/img]

Hi!

It was done by hand. While these elements are somewhat bendy, I don't recommend doing anything mechanically to spread them out. That puts too much strain in one spot which could damage the element.

It was done 100% for cleaning. Nothing to do with spreading heat out. That's not an issue. Thousands of brewers in over 60 countries use our design and nobody's scorching wort (as long as the elements are kept reasonably clean - I add this part as I do get some pictures from brewers who have thick deposits on their elements who have had issues/failures from never having cleaned them).

For cleaning I mostly use a kitchen dish brush and water. This is for the boil element. The HLT element never needs cleaning as it only ever has water in it.

There's more in my "Cleaning Brewing Equipment & Kegs" guide under the USING OUR BREWERY menu, including videos:

Cheers!

Kal

Ok, awesome, thanks for the prompt response!

I will try gently spreading it and see how it goes.

Cleaned my system CIP for first time yesterday and it went really well.

Cheers!
