|
|
Hey all,
So I was doing a cleaning cycle in my BK today just running some PBW dissolved in 12G of water through my wort pump and back in to the BK. Had the BK PID set at 170 degrees and for some reason the temp kept overshooting. The PID was set to manual at 100% and even when I turned it down to 85% it kept overshooting the 170 I set it at. It went all the way up to 180!
Not sure if there may be an issue with my PID or maybe the temp probe? I'm coming back to brewing after a long overseas hiatus so had to go back through Kal's set up instructions. Thinking maybe I'll run the auto-tune cycle on my BK PID unless somebody has some other insight to share?
Thanks all. Cheers.

Hi!
Make sure you're using the PID correctly. If you've set up the boil PID per our instructions it can be used in both MANUAL (% duty cycle) and AUTO (temp based) modes. It's possible to be in MANUAL mode but be displaying the AUTO (temp based) settings. Press the SET button to switch the display mode. My guess is that you're just displaying the wrong mode.
For more, see: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/pages/brew-day-step-by-step
The top value on the PID ("Process Value" or PV) is what the temp probe is measuring. It's just showing what it sees and then the PID reacts accordingly. You can use a known accurate thermometer to confirm per the temp probe calibration instructions here for setting the PID "Pb" temperature offset: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/control-panel-setup

Ah, so I should've been in Automatic mode for specific temps. Similar to when doing hop stands, etc, correct?
Thanks, Kal! Much appreciated!

Correct. If you want to hold at a specific temperature, you need to use AUTO mode.
MANUAL mode is % duty cycle, like the knobs on your stove that probably go from 0-10. Nothing to do with temperature. If you put a pot of water on the stove at 1 or 10, both will eventually get to boiling temperature (212F). One just takes longer than the other.
