Just made a 5l starter of 1968 that went off like a rocket. Before pitching I noticed a medicinal smell. Is this common? Reading up on the yeast it mentions high phenols so I’m hoping it’s not going to translate into the beer. I’ve used this yeast a few times btw but can’t remember if the starters ever had this aroma.

Never noticed that myself, but doesn't mean it doesn't exist as I don't tend to smell my starters. Sorry!

Cheers Kal, just hoping I haven't F***ed up by using it. Most starters I make smell very yeasty / bready.

Anyway, I'm sure ill find out the hard way in 2 weeks.

Feel free to taste it along the way (before 2 weeks) and you'll see pretty soon!
