Hi,

When I hook up the boil kettle to test it my control panel shows zero output on the PID. The light for the element also does not come on.

If I remove the cord for the boil element then the light comes on the control panel and the voltage tests 240 on the plug.

Is this a sign of a faulty element? Or where should I look first?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi and welcome to the forum!

This is a common question. Take a look at the troubleshooting tips here: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25460
Specifically the section "My heating element is not firing at all! (or firing continuously)".
It'll walk you through to ensure that you've wired things up correctly and that you're using the panel correctly.
The yellow ELEMENT ON light should come on when you expect it. If not, it's not a faulty element. Use the link above to troubleshoot.

The ELEMENT ON light coming on when the element is unplugged is also normal.
For more information see the section "The ELEMENT ON yellow light glows dimly when the ELEMENT SELECT switch is in the ON position without the element connected! Is something broken?" in the link above.

Good luck!

Kal

Alright!

Duh, I wasn’t on manual mode.

Can’t wait to make beer now.

Glad it was something simple. Happy brewing!
