Finally got around to updating my chiller so that I can easily prime the chiller coil and pump. No I don't have to get soaked trying to clear the line the way I used to do it.

Looks good. How long in feet is the chiller?

It's a 50ft chiller. Probably overkill, but I built it 15 years ago when I wasn't sure how long to go....and copper was cheaper back then.

Nice, I don't see that as an issue. I really wish mine was a few feet longer. Not so much of an issue this time of year but come Aug it takes awhile to chill.

It's not the length, but how you use it.

Wink

In all seriousness, mine's only 12 feet long but it's convoluted so the heat transfer is extremely good. I use this one:

http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/Convoluted-counterflow-chiller-5-8-diameter-inner-tube-with-1-2-FPT-fittings-already-attached-male-female-water-hose-connections

http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/Convoluted-counterflow-chiller-5-8-diameter-bare-inner-tube-male-female-water-hose-connections

(Two options - one with hose attachments already on, the other without)

If you build one yourself that doesn't have the inner tubing convoluted then longer is definitely better as the wort isn't constantly mixed meaning the heat exchange isn't as efficient.

Nice! I remember looking at those when I needed one, but opted to build one instead. That convoluted stuff does a great job, and compact as well. Mine takes up some space.

Good point. If space is a concern a CFC (or even a plate chiller) takes little room. Here's mine from an old pic:

I like the thermometer for the beer out. I have to rely on "touch" which can cause me some issues, particularly when my water supply temps are so cold. My last Heffe took 3 days to get going because the yeastie beasties wouldn't wake up until everything warmed up. Will be paying much closer attention today and cut down the flow accordingly.

Mine is similar to your Kal but for some reason three of my ports face one way and one (wort out) faces the other way. Works well for my setup because I have permanent water lines running to it that come out the back side of my brew stand. The only one that exits the front is the chilled wort. Mine is also like 12 feet. I really wish it was like 20 feet. If it was longer there would be less waste water used while chilling (with the way I chill my wort).
