I have used an immersion chiller since I started brewing but a friend convinced me to try his copper counterflow chiller. I used it today and I am very surprised how well it work. I attached a photo. I chilled to 67.3 F and I could have been lower if I increased the cold water flow and reduced the wort flow. I have a new item for my Christmas list!

Yep!

That's why I use one myself and recommend them in my build instructions here: http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/wort-chiller
Quick, one pass chilling. Cheers!

Kal

Jeleous of all you folks that have cold ground water... best i can get is 80degF before i have to switch to ice water or be lazy and let the fermentation chamber get it the rest of the way down.

Tempted to hack up an window a/c unit to build a glycol chiller so ground water temp is never an issue.

I do not brew much in the summer because of 72F ground water temps.

My fermenting fridges get more of a workout in the summer as I'll do a quick one pass chill to around 75-80F and then use the fridges to get down the rest of the way...

I'd love to have 72F ground water - mine is currently running about 82F.

Me too! My ground water is in the 80's as well. After initially getting down from boil temp to about 90 degrees I put two 20 pound bags of ice in the mash tun with some water, and run that through the pump and through the water side of the chiller to get it down to pitching temps. You guys and your "one pass into the fermenter" is like a dream down here in Florida!

John

Careful what you dream for! These cold chilling waters are a double edged sword. In the winters we have to put up with this:

Can be used as a beer fridge however:

Yea it's nice to not have to shovel snow. I grew up in New York so I know what that is like. Love the Canadian beer fridge! I guess we always think the grass is greener on the other side. I guess I should be satisfied that we have green grass in Florida in the winter!

Cheers,

John
