I brewed the Electric IPA yesterday and had some strange issues with my HLT PID and wanted to see if anyone has any experience or advice on how to fix it. This is my third brew on the system and I assembled the panel myself. First two brew days went great but this time I plug everything in start to heat my strike water and once I add the grains to the mash tun I realize that I am 10 degress over my set point. It was determined that my HLT PID was actually reading 10 degrees lower then the actual water temp. I verified this with the analog gauge as well as a thermopen. It was not a flow issue as I had the water pump on full tilt and water was recirculating as expected. Ok no big deal, I first just lowered my set temp by 10 degrees and the mash followed suite.

During tshooting I plugged and unplugged the temp probe cable, switched cables but didn't try plugging the HLT probe into another PID, but almost positive the issue is with the PID. 30 mins into the mash I set the temp offset to 10 degrees and adjusted the pid to 150 and the mash stayed the same at 150 so everything seemed to be good. Anyone else have a PID randomly get such a huge offset? Could corrosion on the terminals cause this? I inspected the connections and they looked good but I do store my kit outside in the garage in northern California (minimal humidity) so I wouldn't think that would really be a concern.

Now the more strange behavior was observed later in the brew session when I would notice the PID measured temp would randomly drop to between 40-90 degrees. If I flipped the element select switch to off and back to htl, the PID would readjust and start reading the correct temp again. This one boggles me, really now sure how this could be happening. I haven't changed anything from my first two brew days where it worked flawlessly. Any thoughts?

Hi Loren,

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere. I would re-check everything.

Keep in mind that there are 3 PID <-> TEMP PROBE setups so you can swap things around easily to confirm where the issue is (in the PID, in the wiring between the PID and the XLR receptacle, in the temp probe cable, or in the temp probe tip).
