Ran a test to see if there were any differences between unfiltered and filtered beer using 5 and 1 micron cartridge filters:

Test set-up:

Beer: APA
Batch: 2.5 gallons
Method: Extract
Amber DME – 2.5 oz
Pilsen Light LME – 3 lbs. 6.9 oz.
Golden Light DME – 6.9 oz.
Caravienne Malt (steep)
Crystal 20L (steep)
Orange Blossom Honey 3.8 oz. (10 mins)
Irish Moss ¼ tsp (15 mins)
Columbus 10.7g @ 14.9 AA (50 mins)
Columbus 16g @ 14.9 AA (0 mins)
Wyeast American Ale 1056
Amarillo 2.5 oz. (dry hop 5 days) hop sacks
Procedure: Split batch
Purge all equip, hoses, kegs and filter housings
Keg unfiltered / Keg filtered (2.5 gallon Kegs) 5 micron pre-filter and 1 micron finishing filters
Cold Crash
Carbonate @ serving pressure

Results:

Appearance - I could not observe any difference in clarity which was surprising. I expected significant difference
Aroma - no difference in aroma - on both cases, the Amarillo hops shown through
Taste - did not detect any grassy aftertaste with the filtered beer - did detect grassy taste with unfiltered beer. Filtered beer tasted smoother.
Color - no observed differences. This was surprising

Original test intended to use a 5 micron pre-filter and a 1 micron finishing filter. I mistakenly swtiched the filters so the 1 micron acted as the pre-filter. I don't think that made any difference or invalidates the test.

attached are pics.

I have a carbon filter that I'll try next.

Interesting. I would assume the filtered one will clear up quicker over time than the unfiltered version.

Yep, I was surprised (and disappointed) there was no improvement in clarity so I checked the used pre-filter cartridge and noticed there was no staining or discoloration in the inner chamber (see pic).

The beer is supposed to flow from the outside of the filter into the center and out to the next filter. I threaded the housings and tightened by hand - could it be possible that the housing wasn't tight enough to seal? I wonder now if the beer by-passed the filters. Next time, I'll use the wrench provided with the filters and see if it makes a difference...
