|
|
I'm using the Fermentap Magnet Stir Plate from MoreBeer. Worked fine with a 2L flask.
Needed a larger starter for a lager so used a 5L flask with a little bit more than 2L liquid. The stir plate keeps throwing the stir bar.
Is the stir plate too small for a 5L flask?
If not, what size (length) stir bar is recommended for a 5L flask with the stir plate?
Thanks.

some brands of flasks have a high spot in the middle, which doesn't let the stir bar spin in the middle so it wanders then throws, I bet thats it

Were you using a wide stir bar? I was having trouble when I moved up to a 5L flask with the wide stir bar. Unless it is a large starter (3L or more) i usually use the small "normal" sized stir bar.

I purchased the 5L flask from a homebrew supply. Other than the overall size, the bottom is identical to my 2L flasks.

No, normal width, as far as I know, stir bar. Looks like a pill.

You may have to run it slower too with a 5L flask. Ramp up the speed slowly.

This was the case for my last stir plate. You just had to find the sweet spot.

Try a shorter stirbar possibly. Longer isn't always better.

Also great advice.
