Zymurgy's 2017 best beers in America

For the 15th year in a row, Zymurgy magazine readers have cast their votes for the best commercial beers in America and the results have now been posted.

As has been the case in the past, the list proves that America absolutely loves hoppy beers: Over 80% of the top ten winners are IPAs or double IPAs.

This year Bell's Two Hearted Ale (an IPA) took first place, knocking Russian River's Pliny the Elder (a double IPA) down to second spot. Previously Pliny and Two Hearted held tight in the number one and two spots for seven years.

Many of the 2017 winners are beers we've brewed and have posted recipes for, so if you're not able to get them locally try your hand at brewing them instead. This includes winners such as:

Bell's Two Hearted Ale (1st place)
Russian River Pliny the Elder (2nd)
Bell's Hopslam Ale (5th)
Deschutes Black Butte Porter (16th)
Firestone Walker Double Jack (tied for 27th)
Russian River Pliny the Younger (tied for 27th)
Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA (tied for 27th)
Stone Enjoy By IPA (tied for 38th)

Notably absent is Kern River Citra Double IPA which we brewed last year and enjoyed immensely. This should not be surprising given how hard it is to obtain (often done by lottery due to popularity). Limited distribution beers will always receive less votes simply because less people will have tried them. For this reason it's hard to understand how Russian River Pliny the Younger could even place given that it's only available at the brewpub once a year and usually sells out within two weeks. Beer aficionados obviously love this beer!
