Bags of malt cost too much. Buy at LHBS and pay at least 100% markup. Forget about buying online. Also tried a local brewpub. Once again, about 100% markup.

Anyone doing or interested in doing a group grain purchase in the NOVA area? Or, is anyone in the NOVA area already doing?

Thanks.

There is an active DC group that does group buys here:

Thanks. Unfortunately, DC isn't close. Based on the homebrewtalk into I'd have to drive into DC to pickup the grain. 55 to 50 lb bags of grain add up in weight. Might have to make more than 1 trip. I'd probably lose any savings.

I'm still looking for a group malt purchase in the Burke/Fairfax/Manassas/Gainesville/Bristow/Warrenton/Chantilly, VA area.

Have you talked to folks in your local homebrew club? There's usually clubs everywhere.

Closest homebrew club is in a gated community. If not a homeowner in their community the dues are much higher. Sound like snobs to me.

Asked if anyone was interested in starting a homebrew club. Apparently no interest as no replies.

No responses doesn't mean nobody's interested. You're getting limited exposuring asking in our forum as the traffic is low and it's somewhat specialized to those building or using our electric brewery design.

If you want better results, you should be posting at a forum like HomeBrewTalk.com. You'll get 100x times the eyeballs on your post.

Well, I've also asked locally on homebrewing forums, craigslist, etc.

This one is 15 minutes from you in Gainsville: http://www.dohnova.com/

The one in Gainesville is the one charging a premium if not a homeowner in their gated community.

I seriously doubt it's an actual gated community club. Did they tell you they are a gated community club? That would be weird. I don't see anything on their website about this.

I would imagine that like most clubs they're regional (like any club) so like many that charge dues they do charge more for people outside the area because someone external is less likely to help out and volunteer at events given the distances involved. Practice has shown that most outside the area only show up to bulk buys and don't tend to help out as much. I volunteer at a lot of our local splits and it's a lot of work (many hours on the actual split day, and many hours beforehand organizing), and there are always outliers that are simply looking at saving a buck. I can't of course speak for this club and their reasons but that's been my experience.

When you get involved with the splits and do the work (there's a ton of it!) you start to realize that it's actually a good buy to purchase from your LHBS! I try to do that regularly as well.

Either way, good luck!

Kal

Traffic in this area is horrible. What looks close on a map turns into a long drive. Even on a weekend traffic is terrible in this area.

Arlington, VA is across the Potomac River from DC. Long drive.

Chantilly, VA is near Dulles airport. Long drive.

Fairfax is promising, but I emailed more than once and never received a reply.

Fredericksburg is, map wise, not far. Traffic wise, is a difficult drive.

Gainesville I've already given my input.

Herndon is further than Chantilly

Springfield is about 1 hour or more away with traffic depending on location in Springfield. However, is a possibility and I will research.

The Brewers Guild in Warrenton and Woodbridge seemed to give discounts instead of being a homebrew club. At least this is the impression I got when visiting the websites several months ago.

Google maps tells me some are only about 20 mins away (when there's no traffic of course). If traffic to everywhere is always terrible, it sounds like the only club that would work for you is in your own home. Wink

When we have meets with my local club it's about an hour's drive. It's definitely not convenient, but then you have to pick and choose priorities. I don't do it to save money as while it may be cheaper, once you factor in your time, driving, planning, it's not worth it from a financial perspective. But that's not why people do it really - it's about the common interest, sharing stories, the hobby. For what it's worth, most clubs don't want people joining just to get in on bulk purchases (ours doesn't). That's not why these clubs exist primarily as it does zero to help these non-profit clubs.

I think you're stuck here: You don't want to pay higher prices for the convenience of order online or buying at your LHBS, but you don't want to have to spend an hour driving somewhere.

I admit I was thinking of "Dominion Valley" in regard to Victory Lakes. Dominion Valley is a gated community where Disney once planned a Disney World. People raised a fuss, including actor Robert Duvall. Disney got fed up and walked away.

From the Downright Obsessed Homebrewer website

Section 3. Non Victory Lakes Resident Members

Members that are not residents of Victory Lakes will be charged a higher due rate for their annual membership. The higher fee shall be determined by the Board of Directors.

Sounds normal to me.

Like I mentioned, clubs are about helping out, bringing up the interest in our hobby, not about trying to save a buck on supplies, not trying to bypass the LHBS as they're important and should be supported. So many clubs with dues will charge more for those not in the immediate area as the last thing they want is someone treating them like a storefront because that's not what they are. Clubs are not interested in gaining members who only want to save a buck. They're also not in it for money - I've never heard of a 'for-profit' homebrewing club. It costs money to run many of the events and the people who run the clubs are not paid, and spend 100's of hours a year managing them.

I'm curious ... what's your cost at 100% mark up? There are several option in the NoVA region for fair priced grain.

When a bag of pale malt is $27 and someone sells it for over $50 this is more than 100% markup. I understand people are in business to make money. However, I'm not paying for their vacations too. It's their job to take my money and it's my job to keep my money. A bit of a profit is fine.

Closest group grain purchase is in MD/DC. No fun with beltway traffic.

Instead of writing "There are several option in the NoVA region for fair priced grain." provide details.
