I've added a new step by step guide: WATER ADJUSTMENT

Proper control of water is an important step to brewing any style of beer consistently and successfully. It's yet another aspect in brewing that can take a beer from 'good' to 'great'.

The guides and books I've come across I find are overly confusing or gloss over the actual "how to" parts and only present complex theory. My guide attempts to fix all that. No Chemistry at all, no complex math. Just what to do when, and why, to correctly adjust your water to target any style of beer imaginable.

Want to brew a delicate Kölsch, a hoppy American IPA, a British Bitter, or the latest New England IPA? This guide will give you the target numbers and show you step by step how to get there with the water you have today.

See: https://shop.theelectricbrewery.com/pages/water-adjustment

Comments welcome!

Cheers!

Kal

Thanks for another great resource Kal! Quick question, and this may be somewhat of a stupid one. Looking into pure Epsom salt and noticed that the container of it I have laying at home is MgSO4*7H2O, from what I have read it sounds like that is just the heptahyrdate version of magnesium sulfate. I'm no chemist so I wanted to check if this would still work the same as the Epsom salt you are describing in the guide?

MgSO4*7H2O is actually what my guide wants you want to use (because that's what EzWaterCalculator expects). It's what most places will sell (without you probably even knowing it). I actually had the same question in 2010 - you can read the ins and outs here: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=154713

Thanks for the article!

Downloaded the EZ Water Calculator using the link provided to the EZ Water Calculator site.

Ran virus scan on the MSExcel spreadsheet. Passed OK.

Double click to open the file and MSExcel warns me

"The file format and extension of 'EZ_water_calculator_3.0.2.xls' don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust its source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?"

Has anyone run into this warning on the EZ Water Calculator?

I have never seen that warning myself.

Visiting the calculator website I'm not seeing a way, other than making a paypal donation, to contact the maker of the spreadsheet.

With the Microsoft Excel warning, IMO, it's very dangerous opening the spreadsheet.

Lack of being able to contact anyone adds to the concern about the spreadsheet.

The original author (-TH-) has an 'official' thread here: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=261001

Thousands use this spreadsheet. If there was a major security issue, I'm sure it would be all over the forums. I'm not sure why you're getting the error.

For those who reload ammunition and have a scale in grains, 1 gram is 15.43 grains.

That's what I used today.
