|
|
I just acquired a whiskey barrel from Boulevard Brewing Company. It was originally a barrel for a whiskey company, then went to a maple syrup company, then to Boulevard to age some beer in it. I'm getting some mixed info on what if anything I need to do to it before I can age some beer in it.
I will be brewing my beer this Friday, fermenting for a week or two then transfering to the barrel.
I'm being told to not touch the barrel and just transfer my beer into it by some people. Others are saying I should buy some cheap whiskey and and pour it in there and roll around a bit, dump, then add my beer.
Anyone have any experience with this?

So would you got the whiskey route or something else?
Yeah, we're not to far away. I come down you way every now and then. I've got a buddy that lives in Fremont Hills.

I would only use the barrel for aging something for a long period, not to ferment in and after seeing unhappy friends using a barrel I personally wouldn't use one but you can also use them to age wine

Yeah, I planned on only aging in this barrel. I was just curious if I need to sanitize it with some whiskey or just transfer after fermentation and hope.

all I can say is beer is sugar and sugar soaked into wood can lead to issues with mildew or even attract bugs so I would definitely rinse with something, even rubbing alcohol will work if you can take the top completely off just add it to a spray bottle, it will evaporate
