My set-up is a bit unique. I got 10 gallon Blichmann G1 Boilermakers with boilcoils for pretty cheap. I should have just gone with my own coils, but that's the past. Because of the boilcoil, I have my HERMS a bit raised up higher in the HLT. This requires me to put extra water in my HLT to submerge the bulk of the HERMS. I'm trying to be environmentally friendly, and think of a way to not waste the extra water and brewing salts. My idea is to either remove the extra 1-2 gallons I add to the HLT before adding salts, then sparging as normal, OR just add the salts to the BK before my boil hits my pre-boil volume.

Any thoughts on best practices here? I realize this is extremely minor, but figured I'd pick some brains bigger than mine on the topic.

How about finding a narrow pot or container that fits inside your HLT coil and fill that with the extra couple of gallons to take up the volume needed to raise the sparge water above the coil? Then you could do your water chemistry on the actual sparge volume. The bonus is that if you need a bit more sparge water, you have it already at the correct temperature.
