What sort of mash efficiency are you getting? Some sinking is normal. I get some and still get 95% mash efficiency so I don't worry about the sinking as the only advantage that not sinking could have would be to increase your mash efficiency.

i know this sounds odd but it has worked really well for me. cut a short section maybe 2" - 4" piece of black or grey pipe insulation and cut the sticky part off and boil it for a few mins before use. easy, cheap and works well to keep it above.

like this...

not really worried about efficiency, I just like to see to slight whirlpool on top and it evens out the mash, last brew day it was pushed up to one end, not an even flow

But that's why I ask: The only reason to be want even flow or be worried about it is for mash efficiency.

I get a small hole / unevenness / pushing up too and it doesn't affect my efficiency as I've tried with or without a float myself to see if it makes a difference, and it doesn't on my setup so I choose not to use one (less parts = less issues / less cleaning).

My 2 cents.

My recirculation return fitting is at approx the 10 o'clock position when looking top down from front of the kettle. I attached a length of 1/2" silicon tubing to the recirculation return fitting long enough to coil around the inside perimeter of the kettle and extends about 6" past the Blickmann Brewometer stem. With that length it rests on the stem and the outflow in easily visible

Ive been using a pizza screen for now, the only thing is its a pain to stir fast when needed, this batch I mash hopped with 3 ounces and the mash tuned into glue and had to stir every 15 minutes to prevent a stuck recirculation, you live and learn lol
