my business is located within 30 yards of 5 pubs so i'm pretty friendly with the beer salesmen. they all know i brew so the regularly bring me free samples of their new fairs.

there is a contract brewer nearby ( 300 to 500 gal batches ), they brew for many of the bars. and bottle their own for retail. the salesman left a bottle on my counter today and the only thing he mentioned is that the water is washed through a hop bag before going to the mash, don't know what the temp of the water was, he probably didn't know anyway. he said it added to a grapefruit, floral aroma. i had customers at the time and he left before i could find out anymore.

has anyone tried this or heard of this,, it seams pretty easy to do

I thought this was done for a more rounded bitterness. You can also do first wort hopping. It allows for a fuller extraction and isomerization. No way an aroma is going to last from mashing through the brewing process. Heck aroma doesn't survive the 20 minute boil.

I've done first wort hopping with Pliny clone recipes I've made - I think it helps more with the bitterness than with the aroma, to be sure.

Same here.

A suggestion when you do it if using pellet hops: break up the pellets and spread them in the malt before mashing in, otherwise they tend to clump up into balls of hops and probably don't do much.

I know this is old but Ive used mash hopping for years, "while recirculating" it doesn't add bitterness in my opinion but keeps an even flavor hop flavor even after aging, my process is to mash hop and whirlpool with the same hop, works very well
