An interesting bit over at HBT. http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/stc-1000-a-464348/ . I have 4 of these units and am very interested in being able to set profiles for the ferment.

I'm going to need to buy one and experiment. I like the idea of creating fermenting profiles.

Not to burst any bubbles or anything... BUT. If you want profiles and automated fermentation schedules and such... you REALLY need to take a look at an item I've been beta testing. It's called the Fermostat by Ohmbrew Automations. The guy who's developed it is in my Brew club.

I got one through his KickStarter. Pretty nice piece of gear and works like a charm. But for those who don't want to spend near $200 bucks, this hack of the STC-1000 is an interesting alternative. Two really easy ways of keeping fermentation schedules the same each time you brew.

Cheers!

Check out http://www.blackboxbrew.com

Will came up with The Black Box after linking up with alphaomega (Mats) over at HBT. It's the same flashed STC I believe, but with some minor upgrades. He puts these temp controllers together every few months and sells off a bunch. Check out his store as it seems you can get the STC pre-flashed.

I think proper fermentation profile control would be a welcome addition to any electric brewery.

It's ok. I run pretty simple ale profiles. I've just been using an stc-1000 lately.

I picked up two units from Will a while back and love these things. I travel for work and this thing allows the user to set the profile and leave it alone until it's done. It does whatever you ask it to do including the diacetyl rest. I' used it on 3 lagers and it worked perfectly. Highly recommend, however wills not making them as much and the price has gone up. You can buy them from Brews by Smith.

Caster, how have you liked the outcome of these programmed fermentation profiles? My only hesitation in going this route is that normally I figured gravity readings should drive the desired temp but with these units it is time driven instead. Have you ever noticed your STC taking the temp up for a diacetyl rest too soon and picked up esters, for example? I'm traveling a lot as well so this "fire and forget" type system would be great.

If your doing things right by providing the environment and time for the yeast to do it's work then 99% of the time everything should be fine. I have only a few brews under my belt using the STC1000+, but can't think of a better way to be consistent with my fermentation then automating it. After all, one of the primary rewards of the Electric brewery is consistency, Fermentation and conditioning have to be part of the process and this tool helps do that. A travel a lot, so this is is great when life happens and I can't get to the chamber to make adjustments. I hope this helps, Castermmt

Thanks Caster. Any thoughts from you or others on the STC1000+ with single vs dual temp probes? Not sure how beneficial it is to add in ambient chamber/fridge temp to the algorithm. Also curious what is a typical hysteresis setting for these? My buddy's BrewPi holds within .3 easily and much less when the growth phase is over. Wasn't sure if this could hold something like that.

Here's what I do, I have a standard stc-1000 that just measures the temperature in the chamber and one of these that displays the temperature of 4 devices, so I can read 4 carboys with pt100 probes inside thermowells mounted in the lid of each bucket carboy, then I just change the temperature manually my self based on these readings, the carboys will always read higher while fermenting then when the temps get closer to the air after 5 days I up the chamber temp my self

I normally ferment at 62, this is just raised to let the yest do its final clean up

I use the single temperature probe with a thermal-well in the wort that I stick in the carboy/bucket. This is the best place to get a good quality one that has the spun welded end. Hope this helps, Castermmt
