We've all heard that you don't want to expose beer to excessive fluorescent light because, like sunlight, it can cause skunking (I believe it's the UV portion of the light which reacts with a chemical in the hops, correct?) But what about the new generation of LED lights that are becoming commonplace? Are they safe to expose beer too?

LEDs also typically need phosphors to make white light, but fortunately for the fair-skinned, the similarity ends there. Inside most white LED bulbs is a blue light source, which is converted to a full spectrum of colors by phosphors. Even if the phosphor coating is damaged, the blue light within sits firmly on the visible spectrum, and poses no danger to human skin.

"There is no UV component to LEDs, as far as I know," says Terry McGowan, director of engineering and technology for the American Lighting Association.

Lightstruck skunky beer is caused by both UV and visible blue light. So I'd expect that LED lights would also cause skunky beer.

Interesting - Hopefully somebody will do some proper testing on this at some point...
